How to access the LINZ Data Service basemaps in MapInfo Pro and Spectrum Spatial Analyst

In a previous blog I wrote about how to access the latest aerial imagery for New Zealand in MapInfo Pro through the basemap service provided by the LINZ Data Service (LDS).

Since then the LDS has released a number of basemap services and this blog will outline how to access and use these basemaps in the latest versions of MapInfo Pro and Spectrum Spatial Analyst.

About the basemaps

The LDS has released a number of basemaps and these are described below:

  •  NZ Aerial Imagery - a mapping backdrop of aerial imagery covering 95% of the New Zealand mainland.
  •  NZ Topo 50 - a basemap of the 1:50,000 topographic maps published by LINZ (available both gridded and gridless)
  •  NZ Topo 250 - similar to the NZ Topo 50 but specifically targeted for use at 1:250,000 scale (available both gridded and gridless)
  •  NZ Parcel Boundaries - a map of land, road and other parcel boundaries, and are especially useful for displaying property boundaries. This layer is updated weekly
  •  Hydrographic Charts - showing the precise location of coastline and marine features like buoys, beacons, rocks, sandbars and water depth.

Depending on the map you're creating, and the platform on which you are creating them, then one or more of these basemaps could help creating the map you need.

Of course it is important to note the that these basemaps are essentially images, and while great for providing “backdrops” or reference layers to your maps they are unable to be queried or styled in the way you can with vector layers. However, in most cases by just applying a little translucency or even switching the map to greyscale you can get the basemaps looking pretty good.

The image below is of the LDS Parcel wireframe layer. This basemap would be perfect for providing context to a map that was showing existing or planned infrastructure or engineering projects.

Accessing the LDS basemaps in Spectrum Spatial Analyst

Adding the LDS basemaps to Spectrum Spatial Analyst is a piece of cake.

  1. Log into the LDS and make sure you have a webservices API key.
  2. Find the layer that you wish to access in the LDS and click on the “services” tab. This will bring up the information on tile services (here is the Services page for the NZ Aerial Imagery basemap).
  3. Copy the URL for the “zoom / x/ y template”
  4. Log into the admin console for Spectrum Spatial Analyst
  5. Choose a Map configuration to display the basemap
  6. Select “Add 3rd Party Tile Map”
  7. Paste the URL for basemap into the URL template box
  8. IMPORTANT – you need to replace the “{z}/{x}/{y}.png” at the end of the URL with “{LEVEL}/{COL}/{ROW}.png”
  9. Give the Map a name – this will be displayed in the basemap drop-down list in Spectrum Spatial Analyst
  10. Select either Overlay Map or Base Map.  The Base Map will act as a background image .  If you choose Overlay Map, then you will be able to use this as a layer and alter visibility or change the transparency. 
  11. Select OK and save the map. The layer will now be added as a basemap in the Map configuration you have just edited – just refresh the map and your layer will be visible.

Configuring Stratus

Configuring a WMTS layer in Spectrum Spatial Analyst is as easy as pasting the URL and giving the layer a name.
